Sonnet 2

The distant town's unruly restless roar
a sombre soundtrack in the fading light,
while frail scents of summer promise more
against the fragrant damp of autumn night.
I chose this path to find some short reprieve,
to make the world's unceasing pressures wait,
but brief escape is all we can achieve -
a brittle calm besieged at ev'ry gate.
Not just by cars and crowds but by our thoughts,
those old anarchic friends so strange and bold
whose company, though praised, is seldom sought
for long; we find they won't do what they're told.
Unyielding ghosts that haunt our hard-won peace
so often those that we ourselves release.
